King’s Award for Voluntary Service Presentation

31 January 2025
At the ceremony

The Stirling School of English, a charity teaching English to about 180 learners each year, was presented with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) on 29th January.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Stirling and Falkirk, Alan Simpson, with two Deputy Lieutenants, Jacqueline Fingland and Gaston Robin James, and the Lord Provost of Stirling, Elaine Watterson, presented a crystal award and a certificate to the School’s manager Ilona Hunter and chairman David Howes. The presentation was followed by a speech from the chairman and a volunteer tutor Judy Snell.

After the ceremony, the King’s representatives, volunteers and students enjoyed chatting over hot drinks and cake, and taking photos.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest recognition given to volunteer groups across the UK. The award is equivalent to an MBE and is awarded for life. The School is one of 281 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The volunteers’ work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them. The award was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty The late Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty, King Charles. After being nominated, eligible groups are assessed initially by the local lieutenancies and then by the national assessors. Recipients are announced annually on 14th November, The King’s Birthday.

A huge thank you and congratulations to all of who have volunteered for the Stirling School of English over the years and to all who have sponsored their work. There is no monetary award with the prize. If you wish to donate money to help continue the School’s service, you can do so via the School’s website.
